Early in the game, the best way to increase a Heroes power is by Upgrading their Stars. This also unlocks the next tier of the Hero’s skills. Thus, we will focus on heroes who’s Hero shards are easier to obtain in large quantity, who have good skills in most game modes, and that pair well with other early heroes.

I truly didn't understand the need for a storyline in Land of Empires. It doesn't seem that the gameplay is driven by the story and it feels misplaced and more of a novelty. In your first few minutes you'll need to complete the storyline to gain access to your city. You'll have to complete side missions that, after you unlock your city, will never see again.
